New York (shortened to NY), often called New York City (shortened to NYC), is the largest city in the United States, located in the state of New York. New York’s population is similar to London with over 8 million people currently living in it, and over 22 million people live in the bigger New York metropolitan area. It is in the south end of the state of New York, which is in the northeastern United States.[break][break]
New York City is made up of five boroughs, each of which is a county of the State of New York.[12] The five boroughs—Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island.[break][break]

Darkness. The world has always been shrouded in darkness, living a lie that only the faint of heart could understand. In the early years of the world, that darkness had been great. Death, turmoil, and demons destroying the world that many held dear, the angels stepped in. They helped in creating beings of light, ones that would fight off the darkness until their final breath. And thus, the Shadowhunters were created from the blood of the Angel Raziel in the 11th Century. Slowly the race began to grow, protecting the mundane from those that dwelled in the darkness, a race that became known as Downworlders. Only those gifted with the Sight would be able to know they existed. Things from your worst nightmares that you only heard about in stories are creatures like warlocks, vampires, werewolves, and even fairies. Well, guess what? Those stories are real, and they are ugly.
[break][break]
Even though it only started with one, Jonathan Shadowhunters slowly created more. He began changing mundanes into a demon-fighting race, using the first mortal instrument - The Mortal Cup. Gradually, more of these instruments came into play, things like the Mortal Sword and the Mortal Mirror, to aid in the fight against the darkness and bring peace to the world. And they did just that. Protecting the world, sending demons back to Edom, stopping them from entering the world, and creating more despair. Eventually, the Downworlders believed they were treated unjustly, believed that they were forced to pay for what their ancestors and families had done in the past. That they were being judged because of their race - they believed that they weren't as evil as they were said to be. And thus, in the 19th Century, they all came together with the Shadowhunters to make a deal. This deal was what they call The Accords.
[break][break]
However, the Accords were created to make sure that dark and ugly stayed in their place. Warlocks, Vampires, Werewolves, even Faries forced to follow the words of the Shadowhunters. And every fifteen years, they must be signed by everyone - agreed upon once more. However, this year, something dark has been stirring. Unbeknownst to some, rogue Shadowhunters have been appearing all across the world, making their way to New York City. Why? There is set to be a discussion between all parties at the New York Institute, and there are some influential people that want to see the end of it. These Shadowhunters believe that all Downworlders are evil and deserve to be destroyed. There are even some that have joined the Shadowhunters for one thing, to free themselves from their control.
[break][break]
Their plans? To take the wards around the Institute down slowly, allowing demons to run amuck and put them on edge. And once done, the wards and protections were returned. Thus, each time they investigate, they find nothing wrong. Is it some faulty runes? Is there a trick up the sleaves of those that have betrayed their own? Or does it just show that Henry Stonewell is not fit to be Head of the New York Institute? All these accusations have brought a rift through all, and it's up to Henry and all those loyal to him, to figure things out. But sadly, time is running short - and with the Accords due to be signed in only a few short months, they needed to figure things out. Before another war starts, all the progress between races has diminished, and the mundane world is faced with the same fate that created Jonathan Shadowhunters. Perhaps the very thing they are afraid of, it the thing they need the most right now...to team up with Downworlders.[break][break]

Shadowhunters, also known as Nephilim, are a secretive race of humans born with angelic blood. They are a demon hunting race that has survived for over one thousand years. They have fought the demons valiantly, creating their own culture and civilization within human society. Their mandate is to protect humans.[break][break]
One thousand years ago, the precise date unknown, the earth was being invaded by hordes of demons. A man, Jonathan Shadowhunter, had a warlock summon the angel Raziel. He begged Raziel to help save humanity so the angel mixed his blood with that of Jonathan Shadowhunter, in the Mortal Cup, and gave it to men to drink. These men became known as the Shadowhunters, as did their children, and their children's children. They were given the first Gray Book, listing all of the runes, to use in their fight against demons.[break][break]
The Nephilim follow a strict set of rules set out in the Shadowhunter's Codex. There are many rules and guidelines that must be followed.[break][break]
The goal of the Nephilim is to end the plague of demons on Earth. They are dispatched to every place on Earth to fight against demon hordes. The fight even continues after death. Their bones are used, as the bones of demon hunters are powerful protection, to fortify important buildings.[break][break]
Newborn Shadowhunters have spells cast on them to protect their minds from demonic influences. These rituals protect the Shadowhunters from demon visions for example.[break][break]
Shadowhunters may be trained at a very young age, by their parents or other mentors and guardians. Some Shadowhunters may train at an academy in Alicante, or at Institutes in other parts of the world.[break][break]
There is a variety of weapons used by Shadowhunters. Most of these weapons are made with materials capable of killing demons, some using adamas forged by the Iron Sisters.[break][break]
Most used is the seraph blade, the primary weapons of the Nephilim. They are made of adamas crafted by the Iron Sisters. They call upon the power of an Angel's name to access the blade's power.[break][break]
Shadowhunters are known to hide weapons in churches for their use in case of emergencies, since some forms of demons can only be killed and fought through a certain method of a belief systems. As long as Shadowhunters cleave to no single religion, all religions will assist in their battle. The weapons are usually hidden by a church's altar, with the Nephilim rune drawn over its hiding place.[break][break]
Angel Blood: All Nephilim have some of the angel, Raziel's, blood in their veins. This gives them the ability to survive runes. They also have superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, stamina, coordination, and leaping ability.[break][break]
Runes: a shadowhunter has had several runes placed on his skin, including healing runes, strength runes, speed runes, and stealth runes.[break][break]
Stele: a tool used to draw runes onto the skin of Shadowhunters.[break][break]
Sensor: a tool used to detect demonic activity in the area.[break][break]
Seraph Blades: weapons that take the form of dull tubes with blunt edges when deactivated. They are given Angel names and, when the power of the namesake Angel is called upon, the blade springs to life, growing into a bright, glowing dagger.[break][break]

Regular humans, also called mundanes or mundies, are ignorant to the Nephilim and demons in the "Shadow World".[break][break]
Mundanes can be turned into Vampires or Werewolves when bitten, and can also be infected with Demon Pox. When runes are applied on mundanes, they become Forsaken. Human children can also be turned into Shadowhunters with the Mortal Cup.[break][break]
When Nephilim, demons or warlocks put up glamours, it is so that mundanes cannot see them. The mundanes see either something they would understand, or nothing at all. These glamours can be put down willingly, though. Also, the Shadowhunter rune of invisibility means that mundanes cannot see them.[break][break]
When Shadowhunters have children with mundanes, the children will also be Shadowhunters, since their angelic blood is dominant. Sometimes demons may disguise themselves as humans and seduce a mundane woman which will make her pregnant with a warlock child.[break][break]
The Sight allows Shadowhunters and mundanes to see through glamours. Mundanes also can somewhat tell the future, among other things. Shadowhunters can easily see through glamours naturally, with their sight merely strengthened by the Sight rune on the back of their hand. They have to concentrate for harder glamours.[break][break]
There are some mundanes, however, who are born with the Sight. They tend to have the ability to see into the future. Not only can they see through glamours, but they also know certain things.[break][break]
Some mundanes who have the Sight are employed into Institutes. Mundanes with the Sight, who are employed by Shadowhunters, are trained to fight like Shadowhunters.[break][break]

Werewolves, also known as Lycanthropes and the Children of the Moon, are part of the Downworlder population. Like Vampires, werewolves are actually humans that have contracted a disease from demons which therefore resulted in their transformation and enhanced abilities, in their case, the ability to transform into wolves and have their inhuman strengths and powers.break][break]
When shapeshifted, werewolves look like normal wolves. However, while in human form they look fairly normal, although they may appear a little dirty as they don't bother cleaning up much. When in wolf form, they tend to look relatively like their human forms. In human form, werewolves have enhanced speed and strength and the ability to transform into their wolf form at will. Werewolves, like vampires, must belong with a group; a pack, in their case. The Praetor Lupus make sure that new Downworlders find their place. Each pack is lead by a leader, and any werewolf that kills that leader gains control of the pack.[break][break]
As werewolves, they follow the long held tradition of being mortal enemies of vampires. They say that the demons that passed on the disease to humans that gave birth to vampires and werewolves were mortal enemies, and that prejudice was passed down to their races.[break][break]
Werewolves are not generally born but are usually humans bitten by another werewolf. After the first transformation, it takes a werewolf some time to be able to resist the effect of the moon in different phases. Many train themselves to be impervious to the moon, but even the strong ones are forced into wolf form during a full moon.[break][break]

Shapeshifting - Werewolves have the ability to change into wolves. New werewolves change every time there is a full moon, whereas older werewolves master it and can change whenever they want. Although they feel different during the full moon. Werewolves also have the ability to partially change into wolves, like extending their claws and making their eyes look like wolves' eyes without fully transforming.[break][break]
Superhuman Strength - Werewolves possess enhanced physical strength.[break][break]

Following old trends, these werewolves can be killed by silver, and have a natural aversion to it.[break][break]

[attr="class","SUBTITLE"]infected/born werewolf - the moon's children - shapeshifter
[break]
[break]
Vampires, also known as the Children of the Night, are a species of Downworlders. Along with werewolves, vampires are humans infected with a demon disease.[break][break]
The vampire clan resides in the Hotel Dumont, renamed Hotel Dumort (Hotel of the Dead) by the vampires who reside there.[break][break]
[break]
Blood is the main component of a vampire's diet; all vampires need to drink some kind of blood for their survival. Whether it is the blood of humans or animals is up to the vampire. Mundane food, on the other hand, can make a vampire sick since they cannot digest it, although some have learned to eat food in some unexplained way.[break][break]
Human subjugates, sometimes also referred to as darklings, are mundanes kept around by vampires to feed on when they’re short on blood – like walking snack machines.[break][break]
Instead of becoming weak from blood loss all the time, the healing properties of vampire saliva helps them live longer—increasing their red blood cell count, making them stronger and healthier. It was once not against the Law for a vampire to feed on a human, as it doesn't really hurt them, but eventually, it became illegal. This does still make them seem skinnier and paler.[break][break]
Human subjugates do not eat food. They live on a mixture of vampire and animal blood, keeping them in a state of suspended animation. They’re not immortal, but they age very slowly.[break][break]
When a vampire decides it wants more than a snack and wants a subjugate, the vampire will start feeding its bitten human small amounts of vampire blood to keep it docile and connected to its master. Subjugates worship their masters, and love serving them. All they want is to be near them. They follow their every command and finds offense when others speak badly of their masters. Most darklings continue serving their master in hopes of becoming vampires themselves once they die.[break][break]
[break]
Due to the enhanced predatorial nature of vampires, their abilites tend to be the same as humans but multiplied. Allegedly, their strengths increase and grow stronger as they grow older. They have the ability to sheath and unsheath their fangs on command (though with younger vampires this is harder to master).[break][break]
Vampires can also shapeshift into bats, rats and dust.[break][break]
The Night Children have the power to mesmerize and essentially control their prey – mundanes. Simon unwittingly uses this when he convinces his mother that he never told her he was a vampire.[break][break]
[break]
Notably, the vampires of the Downworld aren't vulnerable to garlic and can see themselves in the mirror. They are still, however, vulnerable to daylight and holy symbols (of whatever their religion was before Turning). They are also somewhat vulnerable to fire, as they catch it easily. There are only a number of ways to kill a vampire: by sticking a wooden stake through their heart, cutting off their head and setting it on fire, letting the sun burn them to death, or bleeding them dry.[break][break]
[break]
For a human to be turned into a vampire, one must drink Vampire blood, be bitten by other vampires, die, buried, and then be reborn and brought back from the dead, then fed blood.[break][break]
When a human consumes vampire blood, they become darklings. They begin feeling that they are turning into vampires themselves, mainly because this is how vampires pass their powers to others - through blood. Anxiety in the sun and when seeing vampires, even in movies, are some signs. Although the effects fade eventually, most Darklings are still drawn to the place where they received the blood, or the vampire from whom they ingested the blood. This urge also goes away when they become vampires.[break][break]
Then, the darkling must be bitten or drained of blood by a vampire to continue the process. Vampire saliva is said to have healing and transformative properties. Once bitten, the human may die. If the human is not completely drained to death, he will only be close to dying and will be at the verge of transformation. The process is said to be like being drugged, painless and pleasant, as if merely going to sleep. Since they have consumed vampire blood, the vampire properties have slightly been transferred to the human, so they may rise again as a vampire.[break][break]
Once 'dead', the fledgling – not-yet or newly born vampires – must die within 24 hours after consuming blood in any manner where the body is preserved. Upon mortal death, the undead body will awaken in a state of transition. They must then be buried and must dig themselves out of their grave and will then be 'truly born'. If no one is there to help them dig out of their grave or if they are unable to, they stay like that, trapped like rats under the earth, starving underground. But if they are not buried, they will stay in the state of transition, dead but not quite dead; never waking.[break][break]
Immediately, the newly born vampire is in a frenzy for blood and will kill anything or anyone close to them just to drink the blood. In order to complete the transition, within the next 24 hours, the new-born, transitioning vampire must consume an exceptional amount of blood, or else they will fade and die.[break][break]

Warlocks, also known as Lilith's Children, are the immortal offsprings of mundanes and demons. They are the only Downworlders who can cast magic because they have demon blood, unlike vampires and werewolves who were merely infected by demonic diseases. Children of demons and humans who cannot cast magic are called ifrits.[break][break]
Many, if not all, warlocks have unnatural body parts, called a demon's mark, such as bat wings, goat feet, lizard tails, scaled hands, or cat eyes. Some also have different colored skin.[break][break]
Warlocks are also unable to have children. It always results in a stillborn, as they are crossbreeds and thus, sterile.[break][break]
Warlocks are often conceived by trickery. It is common for their demon parent to disguise themselves in the form of a male loved one, and seduce the female mundane.[break][break]
Also, when a Shadowhunter and a Demon come together they always result in a stillbirth, so for a long time, there was no Shadowhunter and Demon hybrid that would have made the being a form of a warlock.[break][break]

Do not sign any contracts or agree to any bargains with faeries. Faeries love to haggle but will usually do so only if they are sure they will win. Do not eat or drink anything a faerie gives you. Do not go attend their magical revels under the hills. They will paint a beautiful picture of what awaits you there, but its beauty is false and hollow. Do not tease a faerie about their height. Do not expect direct answers to direct questions. Do expect indirect answers to indirect questions.[break][break]
Faeries, also known as the Fair Folk or fey, are an extremely cunning race of Downworlders. They have angel blood mixed with demon blood. According to legend faeries are fallen angels, cast down out of heaven for their pride. It is also said that they are the offspring of demons and angels. Most faeries avoid midday sunlight, for the devil has no power except in the dark.[break][break]
Due to the legend of their origins, the faeries are associated with the beauty of angels and the viciousness and malevolence of demons. Like angels, they are the least understood of all magical people—the great ancient mystery in the Shadow World. Although they are widely believed to be hybrid descendants of demons and angels—something that their kind has seemingly not bothered to deny—faeries possess human souls just as other Downworlders do, and they are counted as members of the human race by the denizens of Heaven.[break][break]
They reside in the Faerie Realm, within the Seelie or Unseelie court. They are ruled over by a queen and a king. To enter the Seelie court in New York, you must go into the lake in Central Park where the moon is shining on the surface - under the water you will gain entrance into the court.[break][break]
The Fair Folk are also unable to lie. They might, however, tell what they believe is true, even if it is not. They may also expertly weave lies into sentences by using methods such as not telling the whole truth or letting others assume things.[break][break]
If you drink or eat any of their food then you cannot leave Seelie Court unless the Queen lets you leave.[break][break]

Faeries, like vampires and werewolves, possess the unnatural abilities of swiftness, grace, and heightened senses of smell and hearing. The Faerie armies are also legendary in terms of their might in war, as evidenced by their role in the Dark War.[break][break]
The magic of the fey is believed to be unique in the world. It is very old and powerful, but neither demonically nor seraphically aligned. They can harness the powers of the ley lines, along with other strange magics. The Faeries are older than the Accords, older than the Nephilim, and are said to even be the oldest among all races of Downworlders. They possess their own magic that the Gray Book can only partly and imperfectly protect against, at best; however, there does exist Nephilim Marks that protect Shadowhunters from faerie glamours for this very reason.[break][break]
Some faeries have the ability to send someone pleasant dreams; it is considered a faerie gift.[break][break]
