They don't care about others, they are callous and feed on the misery of others. Demons? They are nothing against the cruelty of the fair folk. Those are the words from your mother, the words you grow up on. He should know after all, he gave his all to a faerie and ended up with you and your twin sister bundled up in two blankets on the doorstep. Your mother was a faerie, that's why she abandoned the two of you. You would love to meet her some day, if only to punch her in the face for what he did to you and your sister. Not that your father was much better, but that was later. [break][break] Your life began on the doorsteps your mother left you on but you weren't alone - your twin sister was with you, she was always there. Your father tried his all, he gave you names that he used for the both of you in the mundane world, and he tried his best to be there. But raising two children alone in New York City wasn't easy, you were short on money, and you could watch how your father grew more and more. You didn't make a whole lot of friends at school anyway, partly because you didn't exactly try; your sister was all you needed. The kids at your school were intimidating to you and they noticed - even though you were taller than most of them, you were pushed around and called names. [break][break] You took it upon yourself to make sure they stopped. Your father wasn't amused when you started getting into trouble and he was called into the head office of your school a couple of times. You were eight when you were suspended for the first time but when you got back to school, you finally did it. The others didn't pick on you anymore because they knew you would fight back and your fists were your primary weapons. You were also eight years old when you first came home to an empty house. Your father had left a note, something about seeing someone... [break][break] Two days passed until he came back, but he was different, more upbeat but also more irritable. He said something about working on the big scale now - that he was this close even when he never said to what. He disappeared more frequently in the following weeks, months and you become better at taking care of yourself - or at least you think so. Back then, you had no idea where he got the money from but you hadn't seen his eyes twinkle as much as they did when he came home those days. You didn't understand why until years later but you did notice the bruises in the crook of his arm and the shadows around his eyes. He never answered when you asked him what had happened but as you grew older, you figured it out on your own. [break][break] You had this handled. You took care of yourself and your sister, you kept your head down at school just enough to not get into trouble that would require your father's presence, and while your father was absent for long periods of time, the money he made was always there. By the time you are thirteen, you have started to balance going to school just enough that nobody tried to call your father, and then roam the streets in the evening. There was something about New York City at night that drew you in. You learned around that age that there was more to the story of your mother, that your father had never told you. [break][break] It was just another night in the city, one of those where you had your sister with you. The two of you didn't have a destination, it was just you, the bustle of the city at night, and the dark back-alleys you got a kick out of when you tore through them. You didn't expect to round a corner and suddenly be there by yourself, to hear her scream like that. You turned back around and did what you had to do to keep her safe - your nose ended up broken but your sister squealed something about your eyes when you hissed at the man that he should kill himself. He left, the two of you came back home... And the next morning, you saw it on the news. He'd followed your advice. [break][break] The next time your father came home, you confronted him when your sister was already asleep. She had told you what she had seen when you spoke to the other man, how your eyes had turned black and just a day later, you had seen her eyes do the same when you'd been out at night. You needed to know about your heritage but all he told you was not to push it, that you wouldn't want to know more about your mother.
